Do you have room for one in your home?

Hosting a student from Taiwan will be an amazing experience as you immerse yourself in understanding their culture. Here are some fun facts about Taiwan:

Students will probably find America very different from what they are used to at home, and maybe from what they expected. Nuclear families are predominant in Taiwan, but there are also many extended families with three generations living together, which is not as common in the US. In a traditional Taiwanese family, it is considered especially important to respect the elderly and keep close ties with relatives. Overall, the Taiwanese people are polite and courteous to others.

Clubs and sports are not as emphasized in Taiwan high schools as they are in the US. Students will need to be encouraged to join a club or sports activities where they will form friendships and greatly improve their English. You may even need to be the one to choose and sign them up for their first club, or sport, to show them what to do.

Every Taiwanese high school has uniforms, many rules and regulations.

At school in Taiwan, students eat a packed lunch from home, buy something at the school canteen, or eat at the school cafeteria. If your student wishes to take a packed lunch to school in the US, please help them get to know your kitchen and the ingredients available to them for packing a lunch in America. If they wish to purchase a lunch at school, they are responsible for paying for this. Pork, seafood, chicken, rice and soy are very common ingredients in Taiwan, beef is far less common. The evening meal is the main one of the day, rice is popular and common. Some people eat rice three times a day, while others may eat bread in the morning, and bread or noodles for lunch. Eating a wide variety of foods is considered important for one’s health.
